Over the past several days, I have received a number of emails and Facebook messages from Miami Dade County Residents asking me who they should vote for in the upcoming elections. These are the Candidates that I am actively supporting. • Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (#13). I had the opportunity to work with her on matters regarding the City in Washington DC. Shes been an active and aggressive advocate for the needs of the City and its Residents. She is the consummate public servant, selfless in her efforts to help move this community forward. • State Sen. Oscar Braynon (#28). The City has no greater friend or advocate. We’ve worked together in Tallahassee on the City’s legislative needs and weve been very successful. I believe thats because we both grew up here, we both care dearly about the area, and we both have a larger dream of what a greater Miami Gardens can be. Likewise, Im supporting each of our sitting state representatives - Barbara Watson, Cynthia Stafford, and Sharon Pritchett. While all of them are not currently up for reelection, they have been partners in moving our state legislative agenda forward. • On the Miami Garden City Council, Im supporting Lisa Davis for Seat Two (#93) and Erhabor Ighodaro for Seat Six (#95). Over the past two years, this is what weve done together. We have hired a City Manager whose vision and values are reflective of moving this community forward. The City has hired police officers that actually live in the Miami Gardens and understand who we are, how we live and what we can become. We ushered in a new era of Miami Gardens’ infrastructure by passing a bond that will help activate our childrens interest and decrease crime for years to come. We insisted more community policing techniques be implemented. Since then, the homicide rate in Miami Gardens has decreased steadily this year as the homicide rate in other parts of the county has increased. We changed land-use regulations so that businesses can actually develop along 27th Avenue, between 183rd Street and 199 Street because we understand that we need jobs and places to spend our money in our community. And most of all, I support them because when things got hard they choose public servants and not politicians. They didnt run for headlines or hot issues, they committed to staying the course and building this City, this community, one family- one street - one neighborhood - one district -at a time. They have been working with churches, crime watches, seniors groups, children, as well as every other stakeholder in the City to build what will become not a good City but a great community. They were willing to work and not just talk. They were willing to look for real solutions to solve problems that have existed for decades in this community. In that way, they were willing to lead, considering the consequences for the next generation and not simply the next election. • Perry Thurston for State Atty. Gen (#26). I practiced law against Perry many times when I was a prosecutor. He is fair and smart and will be an extraordinary attorney general. • Rodney Smith for Judge (#45). Rodney is Smart and fair with a good understanding of the law and the needs of the community. • Eddy Gonzalez for Miami Dade County Property Appraiser (#68). Eddy is currently a State Representative. Even though he didn’t represent this area, he worked with me on moving this Community’s legislative agenda forward. He is not someone that just comes around when he needs votes; he has been here working for and with this community all along. This list of candidates is not about choosing one person over another. It is simply a reflection of my experiences with these individuals and my assessment of their commitment to our community. In that sense, I am not saying to pick any candidate, just suggesting that you support those who support you. I have reasons why Im voting for them. Without regard to every other person on the ballot, I trust them. They are public servants. They value this community. They have worked for this community and they will continue to work for this community. Early voting is August 11 through August 15, 2014, 7:00 AM-3:00 PM. August 16 and 17th 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. August 18-22nd 11 AM-7 PM. August 23 and 24th 8 AM to 4 PM. Election Day is August 26. Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (#13) State Sen. Oscar Braynon (#28) Barbara Watson (#36) Lisa Davis for Miami Gardens Seat Two (#93) Erhabor Ighodaro for Miami Gardens Seat Six (#95) Perry Thurston for State Atty. Gen (#26) Rodney Smith for Judge (#45) Eddy Gonzalez for Miami Dade County Property Appraiser (#68)
