Over the past two days, we have had to help two dog cross the bridge. One, was the elderly, sick dog left at our adoption event over a month ago. We vetted him and found out he had valley fever and possible bone cancer, among a few other ailments. After 6 weeks in medical foster on medications, he did not improve. Dr. John Carr, Joanna Janger and I helped him leave peacefully yesterday afternoon. He was ready, we could all tell. His eyes and his quick departure said he was just barely hanging on. The second was a puppy left on the side of the road. He was being fostered by Elizabeth Hartman who gave him the knowledge that humans can be kind. Unfortunately, his vet check revealed that he had a birth defect, an esophageal obstruction, that was probably not curable and would cause him to suffer. It was decided that the humane thing was to help him cross the bridge in the loving arms of his foster. I could not be there, but I always try to be. When Liz called me sobbing, I had to tell her that this is the worst of the work she will ever do. She had to be strong and to help the puppy cross because that is the greatest gift anyone can give anyone in this world. Be with them and lovingly soothe them as they cross over into the other world. As humans, animals give us every opportunity to be better. They make us better. I am so proud of Elizabeth for facing this hard, hard situation with dignity and grace and giving Buddy the love that he deserved. I am proud of Joanna for caring for Gramps and proving that elderly dogs do matter and that they are loved, even by those that just met them. Thank you Gramps and Buddy for making us all better. RIP now and we will see you wherever the dogs go. Love you to the moon and back, to infinity and beyond.
