Overseas Surgery Warning! ACT Pathologist Professor Peter - TopicsExpress

Overseas Surgery Warning! ACT Pathologist Professor Peter Collignon, Director of Infectious Diseases & Microbiology, Professor, Australian National University Medical School said people should not go overseas for elective surgery, in particular abdominal operations. It may be cheaper, but if something goes wrong you are in big trouble. Recently reported in The Age*, an article entitled “Doctors warn on overseas surgery after teacher Brian Pool catches superbug” reported on the case of a New Zealand man who had gone overseas for surgery and had returned with a superbug that could not be treated. The man subsequently died. Its the first time Ive ever seen a totally resistant bacterium, said Dr Mark Jones, a clinical microbiologist at Wellington Hospital. Nothing would touch it. In a recent article we identified that NIB, Australia’s only publicly listed (and therefore profit-driven) health fund now offers a guarantee on dental treatment that their members have done overseas. Whilst the attraction on low-cost dental treatments mixed with a holiday is appealing to some, the real cost of the exercise can be devastating should something go wrong. The real issue for any patient is that they are walking into an unknown environment in the expectation that, whilst paying less, they are going to receive the same level of treatment, care and surroundings of their home country. When the Director of Infectious Diseases & Microbiology says because on the risk of infection do not go overseas for elective surgery, why would you risk it?
