Owen Manchester, friend of camp and Executive Director of the State YMCA of Michigan from 1981 to 1989, passed away on May 11, 2014. In On the Sloping Pine Hills, K.P. Rode wrote of Owen: In the early eighties, Owen Manchester had become the new Executive Director of the State YMCA, at a time of some confusion and financial challenges. He had a lifetime of experience in the YMCA, including a working knowledge of camping. He brought wisdom and action to the organization, bringing about stability and a sense of direction to all State YMCA programs. During the eighties he was a constant source of encouragement and support to me and the others on the State Y staff. The State Y moved its headquarters to Hayo-Went-Ha so he was always readily available for us. I appreciated him very much and relied on him for advice and direction and was never disappointed.
