Job Description: The Web and Print Editor shall be responsible for carrying out and ensuring the quality of the editorial process for both web (portal) and print (reports) operations. The primary responsibilities shall include: a. generating story ideas with internal and external writer panels; b. building a network of writers and reporters; commissioning well-established and new authors to submit publishable material; c. refining, re-writing and editing content; d. looking after layout, design, pictures, and artwork; e. proofreading for publishing in print or online; f. writing a small number of articles each month; g. creating and executing strategies to enhance the quality of engagement of specific target audiences (e.g. young people); and h. identifying partnering opportunities with other publications and portals to enhance readership and click traffic on the portal. It is, therefore, important that the editor may have an interest and deeper grasp (a fascination?) with how science and innovation shapes our world. In addition to managing the day-to-day operations of the publication, the editor must also develop a comprehensive strategy for the publication to target particular audiences. This must include identifying topics that are of current and long-term interest to audiences, engage with opinion-makers and influencers who attract readership, other activities and initiatives that may engage readers in spending more time on the publication or interacting with other readers. The Editor shall develop an editorial strategy in close collaboration with the Managing Editor and the Publisher. The Editor must also play an important part in the re-design and upgradation of the web portal and work closely with the web development team to make it happen in an efficient and effective manner. In addition, the editor shall also carry out editorial responsibilities for at least 3-4 print publications (reports) over 2 years and will explore the possibility of developing an electronic magazine. Position is based in Islamabad. We are ideally looking for a candidate in Islamabad but may consider relocation for someone with appropriate credentials. Skills Required: The Ideal Candidate shall be someone with a Bachelors or Masters degree in English Literature or Linguistics, Mass Communications, or Journalism. Since the project requires science communications, prior experience or strong interest in communicating science, technology, and innovation to lay audiences will be a must. Someone with a four year Bachelors degree with 2-3 years of experience or a Masters degree with 1-2 years of experience will be preferred. We would prefer somebody with a foreign qualification. Prior experience of working within a media operation (either print or online, or both) within an editorial capacity will be a must. Experience of working with virtual platforms such as blogs, portals, and other forms of CMS will be an additional asset. Either way, the ideal candidate shall demonstrate the ability to learn whatever technology it takes to deliver the job. Excellent communications ability including both written and spoken English. Excellent organizational and project management skills are a must. A quick learner with the right attitude to contribute and learn from an exciting initiative. Working as a part of a small team of professionals will require resourcefulness, teamwork, a can-do attitude, and flexibility to take on different roles. --------------------------------------------------------------------
