PANAJI: The cabinet on Tuesday approved a proposal of 71.61 lakh for the conservation of the Chapel of the Weeping Cross in the convent of St Monica at Ela in Old Goa. Chief minister Manohar Parrikar said that the museum of Christian art had prepared an estimate for the conservation of the same chapel for 60 lakh. The museum also submitted another proposal for conservation work of the Chapel of Weeping Cross amounting to 71,61,440. The administrative approval and expenditure sanction has already been granted. Permission has been granted to the museum to entrust the conservation work in the second phase amounting to 71.61 lakh to the same contractor. As per government approval, the museum had taken up the conservation work of the chapel. The validity of the MoU with the museum of Christian art expired on June 21, 2011. While renewing the MoU, the museum suggested some changes such that conservation work be taken up continuously without any hindrance. The museum will be paid by the government in the following stages; 25% on issue of work order, 50% after completion of 50% of the work duly certified by the technical cum financial committee, 20% at the final stage and 5% after completion of the work.
