I am getting ready at last, to begin making carving knife blades. The knives will be made from type O-1 Tool Steel and will be hardened and tempered to hold a pristine carving edge. The handles will be made from a variety of different woods, including Yellow cedar, Oak, Hickory, Mahogany, Mountain Ash, and Alder, just to name a few. These knives will be available for full retail cost. Prices will vary depending on blade size and type of wood used. The most affordable believe it or not, will be the ones fitted with a yellow cedar handle. The knives will come in 2 basic sizes, large and small. There are several different blade styles and profiles including: bent knives, crooked knives, hooked knives and straight knives. They will be hardened with heat treating and oil quench, then tempered to an approximate rockwell hardness of 60, to 62.2. The hardening process is achieved using a high heat of approximately 1475-1500 degrees, and then rapidly cooled by quenching in an oil bath. The tempering is achieved by heating the steel to approximately 400 degrees farhenheit and then is air cooled. The blades will be polished to a fine sheen, but not necessarily to a mirror finish. The polishing and smoothing is only used so that the blades can achieve maximum sharpness and can hold a fine edge for woodcarving. They will be glued, and then bound into the handle with a green, or white twine. The binding provides several features, not the least of which, makes them look authentic, provides grip and minimizes slipping when the knives are in use, and protects the hands from abrasion that can cause blisters and callouses. Although decorative, the twine also adds strength and added strength to the gluing process, thereby minimizing the blade from working loose. This provides durability, while making the knives attractive and comfortable to use... Most of the carving knives will be right handed, or, ambidextrous in nature. Straight knives are mostly right handed. Bent, Crooked and hooked knives are ambidextrous and can be used by right-handed, or left-handed carvers. Left-hand carving knives can be made only by request... Good night all.
