PAPILLOEDEMA Papilloedema may be benign (benign intracranial pressure, which of course isn’t benign) or malignant (malignant hypertension or tumour). Other causes include: • mass lesions in (abscess or benign tumour) or around (e.g. chronic subdural) the brain • too much blood getting in: hypercapnia causes loss of cerebral autoregulation • too little blood getting out: central retinal vein, sagittal sinus, or cavernous sinus thrombosis • too little CSF getting out: hydrocephalus including post-subarachnoid haemorrhage • lead poisoning and optic neuritis
