PARENTS PLEASE READ!!!! In the United States, 1 in 4 crash fatalities involve someone 16 to 24 years old, nearly twice as high as other age groups (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). Below are statistics from other national organizations that provide additional insight: • Over half of teens involved in fatal crashes in the United States were not buckled up. Teenagers have the lowest seat belt use of any age group. (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). • Teenage motor vehicle crash deaths in 2011 occurred most frequently from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) • Nearly half of all United States high school students aged 16 years or older text or email while driving. (Centers for Disease Control, 2011 statistics) • Each teen passenger increases the risk of a teen driver crash, with three or more passengers quadrupling the risk. (National Safety Council) • In 2011, 59 percent of the deaths of teenage passengers in passenger vehicles occurred in vehicles driven by another teenager.
