PART I –WRECKAGE AND RECOLLECTIONS The air was cold and stung his nose when he inhaled. John Sterling blinked several times to regain his bearings, and then looked out the broken windows of the cockpit he was still strapped into, his hands maintained an iron grip on the steering mechanism. Shaking off the ringing in his head and the resultant daze, he unbuckled himself, and climbed out of the cockpit to survey the desolate frigid land before him. Groaning as he heaved himself up a sheer cliff wall in hopes of getting a better view, his mind recalled the events of mere hours ago. Upon reaching the summit, John willed himself to walk in a straight line through the frigid wasteland to reconnect with his senses. Bundling his arms under themselves, he trudged forward, knowing that in order to survive, his thoughts needed to be as active as his body. Sterling stretched his arm out in front of him in an attempt to sense if there were any survivors about, but felt nothing but cold air and loneliness. As Sterling trudged up a hill, his foot sank into a bank of snow. As he stumbled to regain his footing, his arms extended outward and grabbed for snow that was loose. He tumbled back downward, head over heels, until he wound up face down at the bottom of the hill he was climbing. His breathing was now labored and heavy.
