PBSs Realta this evening focused on the Bridge to Gozo - I am convinced that this was a no more than a vote-catching gimmick for both political parties that was revived now in order to distract the public from the ongoing politican scandal. While we would like to see that 3/4 billion Euros being used for positive investment in Gozo, thats not going to happen, as already the Government is saying that private investors will foot the bill. If a 3km bridge between Sicily & Italy proved unfeasible when Sicilys population is 5 million, how can a 3.3km bridge to Gozo be feasible with a population of 37,000? How can we rely on studies carried out by the very company thats poised to take the contract - talk about conflict of interest! Only serious studies will show whether a permanent link will boost or harm Gozos tourist economy, but a tunnel at 1/3 the cost of a bridge, and much less environmental impact seems like a better option to me. This is the headland earmarked to take the Gozo end of the bridge. Enlarge it and youll see the prehistoric cart-ruts and what looks like a temple structure on the right. Can we afford to touch landscapes like this?
