PCG joins two-day summit on gender equality in public transport PCG: The Philippine Coast Guard has recently participated in the Gender and Transportation Summit organized by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Roxas Boulevard, Manila held on 17-18 November 2014. The summit was attended by different agencies from the rail, road, air, and maritime transport sectors and is anchored on the theme, Accelerating Equitable Development through Inclusive Mobility” which aims to address the pressing issues in gender concerns and bridge the gaps between gender and the transportation sector. Among the guests of honor were Secretary Joseph Emilio Aguinaldo of DOTC, Honorable Jose Perfectuo M Lotilla the Undersecretary-in-Charge of Civil Aviation Sector of DOTC, and Honorable Remedios Ignacio-Rikken the Chairperson of Philippine Commission on Women (PCW). The breakout session of the maritime sector was graced by Dr Maximo Mejia Jr., Administrator of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA); Miss Emma L Suzara, Department Manager of Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Commercial Services Department; VADM EDMUND C TAN PCG (Ret), General Manager of Cebu Ports Authority (CPA); RADM CECIL R CHEN PCG, Vice Commandant for Administration; ADM RICHARD U RITUAL, President of Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA); Ms. Merlie J San Pedro, Vice President of Women in Maritime Philippines (WIMAPHIL) and other heads of sectoral and attached agencies under the DOTC. A Memorandum of Agreement to support the participation and advancement of women in the transport sector was also drafted and signed during the said event. The MOA signing was headed by Secretary Joseph Abaya with signatories from the four participating transport sector. For the maritime sector, the signatories include MARINA, PPA, Cebu Ports Authority and PCG representing the government agencies and PAMI, FAME, WIMAPHIL among others representing the civil society. In his speech, Secretary Abaya extended his gratitude to both the government and private sectors for coming together for the first time through the said event to promote the advancement of gender equality in the transport sector.
