It is hard to assess what is most difficult to watch--his hands up in a surrender while he spoke or his last words gasping that he cant breathe as he died--all caught on film. Overall, I am grateful for the police and all members of our society who put their lives on the line to enforce order in what is increasingly an uncivilized society. Believe you me, I am grateful for the option of calling 911. But, I am pained beyond belief that a man on the sidewalk who so obviously sought to not fight back physically has been murdered and the response has been focused on just the illegal choke hold. This issue is not just about the choke hold anymore than the murder of Oscar Grant in the Bay area was just about a taser. Today the father of six is dead and on the day he was murdered (which is the only day that matters) his only obvious crime was being a black man in Staten Island.
