PHILS PSYCHEDELIC ARCHIVE (8) Hey! Yardbirds everyone. They were one of the quirkiest groups ever thrown up by the underground; starting as an excellent R&B band( thats rhythm and blues, for anybody under 40), and seemingly becoming more psychedelic without too much fuss. This did rather coincide with Jeff Beck replacing Eric Clapton on lead guitar, but any disappointment about that was short lived. The signs of something great was there in 1966, with Over, Under, Sideways, Down which followed several other well received singles, and the album now known as Roger The Engineer, which I hope was a description rather than an order. When bassist Paul Samwell-Smith left to concentrate successfully on production, he was replaced by Jimmy Page, who played guitar, and this resulted in a classic single Happenings Ten Years Time Ago. The aforementioned album still sounds fresh today, despite the slightly chaotic styles of the different songs; but this was The Yardbirds experimenting, and after Jeff Beck left, they never reached those heights again, splitting up in 1968. However, if they had only existed for this one song, it would have been worth it. youtube/watch?v=pAVuOQ7Z4WU
