PHL CONSULATE GENERAL IN AGANA JOINS ESKWELAHANG MUNTI NG GUAM (EMG) 9TH GRADUATION CEREMONY 29 April 2014 - The Eskwelahang Munti ng Guam (EMG), an informal school for Filipino and Filipino-American children on Guam, ended its 9th session and conducted its commencement program on April 27 at the Tamuning Senior Citizen’s Community Center. Established in February 2010, the EMG aims to teach Filipino values, culture, history and language to Filipino and Filipino-American children on Guam and to develop their talents and skills in reading, singing, and dancing at a young age. The classes, which are held for ten (10) Saturdays, were conducted by volunteer teachers led by EMG Principal, Mrs. Milagros K. Moguel, Dr. Clarissa Quan, Ph.D., Mrs. Gloria Baguinon, Mrs. Ciony Viray and Mrs. Madeleine Fernandez together with teacher assistants Mr. Jun Moguel, Ms. Amanda Quan, Ms. Josie De Guzman and Mr. Noel Moguel. The 9th session of the Eskwelahang Munti ng Guam, which started in February this year, produced the most number of graduating students thus far, with a total of 49 graduates compared to total of 13 and 9 students enrolled in its 7th and 8th session last year. During the commencement program, the forty nine graduating students were divided into two groups. The first group consisting of twenty six (26) children aged 4 to 8 years, demonstrated their knowledge of the Philippine Flag. They also performed songs like “Penpen de Sarapen” and “Sampung Mga Daliri” and dance the “Cariñosa”. The second group comprising of thirteen (13) children aged 9 to 12 years, showed their ability to speak and read Filipino language by acting and demonstrating the “Munting Eskwela” and reciting the stanzas of Dr. Jose Rizal’s poem “Huling Paalam”. They also performed the dance “Subli”. Philippine Consul General in Agana Bayani V. Mangibin and Consul Mark Francis C. Hamoy were invited to grace the graduation ceremony and to award the certificates of completion to the 49 graduates. In Consul Mangibin’s brief message, he thanked the EMG volunteer teachers and teacher assistants for their hard work and dedication to teach young Filipinos on the island about Philippine language, culture and traditions. The Consul General emphasized the importance of preserving the Filipino language by citing the famous quote attributed to Dr. Jose Rizal, “Ang hindi marunong magmahal sa sariling wika, daig pa ang hayop at malansang isda” (He who knows not how to love his own language is worse than beasts or putrid fish). He also reiterated the Consulate Generals commitment to support the EMG as it continues its 10th session in September 2014. He thanked the newly formed Filipino Cultural Center (FCC) headed by Mr. Emelio Uy for supporting and including the Eskwelahang Munti as one of its projects. Four (4) of the students received special awards, namely, Ariabella Borja and Alyssa Valdez for the first group and Michael Pangelinan and Peter Vaughan for the second group. Guests in the graduation ceremony included Senator Dennis G. Rodriguez, Jr. of the 32nd Guam Legislature, officers and members of the Filipino Cultural Center led by its President Mr. Emelio Uy and Vice President Mr. Alex Gagaring, as well as parents of the students.
