PIA QUEZON: DTI, SM-Lucena launch handicrafts exhibit By Joselito M. Giron LUCENA CITY, Quezon, June 27 (PIA) -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and SM City Lucena launched on June 24 a handicrafts exhibit to promote livelihood and economic development among entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs in the province. Dubbed as "My SM, My City, My Crafts," the activity is an exhibition of uniqueness and artistry of local handicrafts of Quezon Province. Maricel Alquiros, SM City mall manager, said the event will run for five days to create enthusiasm to people who want to engage in handicraft production. The activity showcases 10 great craft manufacturers of pots, wood carvings, buri bags, decorated soap, indigenous gown, kiping (rice wafers), coconut decors, candles, and other house decors. “The exhibit is part of SM malls contribution to help the community prosper,” Alquiros said. Meanwhile, Leila Cabreros, Consumer Welfare Division Chief of DTI-Quezon, said their office offers skills training like product packaging, marketing, and product processing to organizations and individuals interested. Cabreros cited buri bag making in the towns of Mauban and Sariaya which have benefited the women in the said areas as well as provided income for the Gat-Uban Weavers Association and Sariayanas Weavers Group. Quezon provincial tourism officer Alberto Bay Jr. said the exhibit is also part of the promotion of artistry and modern designs of handicrafts of the province. Some of the famous exhibitors are Ugo Bigyan pottery, Sa’tin craft, Banglos wood craft, Martha’s handicraft, Soap farm, Cocos Nucifera Pacific Enterprise and Lucban Kiping. (CPG/JMG-PIA4)
