PILLAR OF HOPE: HENRY AJIR TOR Henry Ajirbee Tor, one of Masev nation’s foremost Finance and Banking people, is also an astute Administrator and Community Leader. Henry Tor, as he is popularly known by his associates, friends and admirers, was born 46 (forty six) years ago to the humble family of Vincent Ayisa Tor Zeka of Turan, Uburuku Kindred, Mbalom Council Ward, Yonov District, Gwer Local Government Area of Benue State. Born to parents who understood that education was the priceless asset they could bequeath to a child, Henry Ajir enrolled for his primary education at a tender age. He obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1977 while in Primary Six with a testimony of brilliance. In the same year, the young and ambitious Henry Ajir, who came tops in the common entrance examinations in Benue State, was offered admission into the prestigious Mount Saint Gabriel’s Secondary School, Makurdi where he passed out with flying colours in 1982. Burning like wildfire during the harmattan, Henry Ajir’s quest for knowledge knew no bounds and he proceeded to the School of Basic Studies, Makurdi, having turned down his first offer of admission to the elitist Federal College of Arts & Science, Victoria Island-Lagos in order to stay close home to heal from the sudden loss, in 1977, of his dear Mother, Mbaember Ayisa Tor, who lived a short but impactful life and whose wish on her death bed was that “Ajir and his younger siblings must all go to school.” Henry Ajir’s success at the Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination at the tender age of 17 prepared him for the rigours of university education. His unquenchable thirst for knowledge further took him to Bayero University Kano where he bagged a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1988 at the age of twenty one. Henry Ajir Tor was deployed to Plateau State for his mandatory National Youth Service Corp Scheme and was posted to Continental Merchant Bank Nig. Ltd, Jos Representative Office for his primary assignment during the 1988/1989 service year where he cut his banking teeth. Armed with an honours degree in Business Administration and hands-on banking experience gained during the service period, at one of the leading banks at the time, Henry Ajir Tor had a brief stint with People’s Bank of Nigeria in its Makurdi and Oju branches as Programme Officer and Branch Manager respectively before he was recalled by Continental Merchant Bank and offered a full time job as Banking Supervisor in their Port Harcourt Branch in appreciation of his sterling performance during his NYSC service period. This would come to mark the beginning of an illustrious and rewarding career in banking spanning over two decades and involving five top notch commercial and merchant banking institutions including the defunct Mercantile Bank of Nigeria; Omega Bank Plc; Intercontinental Bank Plc (now Access Bank Plc) and Skye Bank Plc. With his eyes set for the top, Henry Ajir Tor clearly recognised the need for him to deepen his intellectual base to adequately prepare him for greater responsibilities that lay ahead. He proactively pursued a post graduate programme at the University of Calabar leading to the award of a Master of Business Administration (MBA). On the professional side, Henry Ajir Tor is an Associate Member, Chartered Institute of Management (CIM) and a registered member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers. The performance profile and dedication of Henry Ajir Tor in the banking sector were too glaring to be ignored. He held several positions of responsibilities while at Intercontinental Bank Plc (now Access Bank Plc) such as Head, Marketing, Jos Branch; Pioneer Branch Manager of Gombe Branch; Pioneer Branch Manager of Makurdi Branch; Manager Public Sector Group, Jos main branch. The competence of Mr. Henry Ajir Tor in banking and financial management shone like a million stars and this became his unique selling point. He voluntarily resigned his appointment with Intercontinental bank in March 2008 to attend to his private businesses but was once again persuaded, barely a month later, to join Skye Bank Plc as Senior Manager Designate to set up its structures in Benue State. Shortly after successfully midwifing Skye Bank Plc, Makurdi Branch he was elevated to the position of Area Manager in charge of North Central II covering Benue, Nassarawa and Plateau states with an asset portfolio in excess of N5Billion. Henry Ajir Tor, a devout Christian, is a stickler for excellence and is self motivated to always deliver on any task entrusted to his care. He believes in the core virtues of transparency, Accountability and good corporate governance. These factors which are at the core of his consistent performance are clearly the critical success factors for everyone aspiring to a leadership position in today’s globalised environment. Henry Ajir Tor came to a community consciousness during his interactions in and around Benue State in the discharge of his banking duties and driven by his passion to uplift his people resolved, against good counsel, to voluntarily quit his high paying job to join hands with men of goodwill and conscience in the political space to impact the lives of his people. Today, this consummate banker and astute Manager of Men and Materials is the Managing Director of Primefield Associates and Group Chairman of Accolade Group of companies based in Abuja with corporate interests in Outsourcing, Media Consultancy, Financial and Management Advisory Services, Events Management, Corporate Promotions, to mention a few. In the course of his career in the banking industry, Henry Ajir Tor attended several courses and workshops on financial management, emotional Intelligence, relationship management, human capital development and customer service experience. Interestingly, Tor’s sterling performance in the financial services industry earned him numerous commendations and awards. A man of the people, Henry Ajir Tor is a community leader that mingles with the lowly, high and mighty with ease. One character trait that clearly sets him apart from others is his humble and unassuming disposition which continues to earn him large followership across the entire Masev land. He is actively engaged in community development activities and has served his community in various capacities. He and four others started what is today known as NYGON Educational Foundation and he still serves as its Treasurer. NYGON Educational Foundation is a NGO dedicated to the educational advancement of the Masev nation. A generous philanthropist and pillar of hope, Henry Ajir Tor has helped to shape and continues to mould and refocus countless destinies through his milk of human kindness. A widely travelled and dedicated family man, Henry Ajir Tor is happily married to his first and only love, Ginika Florence Tor, and the union is blessed with four loving children - Doofan, Yimase, Chiebuka and Emberter.
