PINAS URBAN INK: Why do you call yourself FRIZZ? FRIZZ: Dati pagmay “freestyle battle” sa kalye ako yung laging nilalaban, ako yun parang pambato nila coz of being spontaneous every time I spit out words they actually turn to good rhymes. They got Frizz from the word “freestyle” itself, that was way back 2004. PUI:When did you start rapping and how did you discover that it was actually a talent? FRIZZ:It started 2002 when I was in high school, my brother used to have a rap group and they used to hang out and rap endlessly in our place. At first I wasn’t really into it until it became a routine, nasasabayan ko na. Then one day, my brother heard me rappin’ one of their songs and there he had discovered my talent and also had the idea of hooking me up in their group. PUI:We want to know about your first onstage experience, where and how did it go? FRIZZ:It happened like 2002, when we’re having a school event. There were several rappers performing onstage and my schoolmates were like bugging me out to go up the stage and show them what I got. Till it came to the point that, what they didn’t know, I was already at the backstage waiting for the perfect timing to grab the microphone from the performers and they were all shocked. Of course I was a lil’ bit uneasy at first but the screaming crowd got my blood real alive and they really where asking for more. They were screaming out my name like a rally “HELL-T!” “HELL-T!!”, di pa Frizz tawag sakin nun. So from there it crashed my mind that I maybe really am born for this. PUI:Earlier you mentioned that your brother hooked you up in their group, was it the same group you first had belonged to at that time? FRIZZ:Yeah, and we used to call ourselves “Manila Clicka”, my foundation when it comes to battles started here. We love joining rap battles, we really take time to go from places to places just to gain more experiences. I remember that there was a time na lumaban kami sa isang rap battle somewhere in Rizal and were totally choked, black out, I feel like my stomach was twisting and people all I hear was people booing us all over the place and because of total embarrassment nagover the bakod na kami sa paguwi just so no one could notice us anymore. We became tougher because of this though, “if you learn from defeat you haven’t really lost”. We learn from each failure and from each mistake we make. So sa mga sumunod na laban namin nanalo na kami. It really makes me feel good whenever I remember where we begun. PUI:Have you ever been involved/affiliated in a gang? FRIZZ:I’ll be such a hypocrite if I’d say no. So that would def’ly be a YES. I became a member of Manila Mafia, one of the most notorious gang in the neighborhood of San Andres. The gang got really wider which we didn’t expect. So we decided to turn Manila Mafia itself, into a rap group. PUI:I have noticed that your songs are kinda dark and very underground. How did you come up with that concept and why did you choose that? FRIZZ:We did not actually choose that kind of concept. It came out naturally. We write about what our hood and what’s happening around us. PUI:I heard you also wrote rap love songs? FRIZZ:Hahaha, honestly, ayaw ko but our manager that time was pushing us to go mainstream so we could interact with regular people. PUI:How do you differ yourselves from other rap groups? FRIZZ:WE are not rappers trying to be gangsters, we are gangsters trying to be rappers. We express our real life experiences through rapping and I believe that this pure quality really makes us exceptional from others. PUI:Why have you changed your group name on one of your mixtapes, what does GMB represent? FRIZZ:We did not actually change it, we are still Manila Mafia. We changed our theme, we decided to make it lighter so everyone would listen and understand. We turned it to “GET MONEY BOYS”. PUI:Why “Get Money Boys”? FRIZZ:Walang nagrarap dito sa Pilipinas tungkol sa pera na consistent. Bakit? dahil sa poverty and corruption. Ang hirap kaya sumulat ng kanta tungkol sa pera. This is also one of the unique qualities of our group. PUI:Who are the members of the group? FRIZZ:Myself, my brother Lepke and our other member who passed away from an accident ”Shorty”. PUI:I am sorry to hear that Frizz, very tragic.. FRIZZ:Nah, it’s okay coz his music will live forever. PUI:I noticed that your last appearance on air was your guesting in “Ruffa and Ai”? What happened? FRIZZ:That was 2009, naisip namin na magpahinga muna at magpayaman dahil we were really challenged by the way we compose our lyrics, we got really inspired by our songs. PUI:So 2013 will be a comeback? FRIZZ:Definitely, this “comeback” will be bigger and better Manila Mafia Family. So to all our supporters, haters and critics and for those who don’t believe in hip hop culture in the Philippines, the long wait is over. Watch out for the big blast! 1017 HOODLUMS has arrived!!
