PLANTING FOR THE PANTRY/ COLUMBIA CENTER FOR URBAN AGRICULTURE Sharing a note from Slow Food member Jill Lucht about a great project from CCUA... Please join me in support of a great local effort that fights hunger in our community: today, tomorrow and into the future. The Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture’s Planting for the Pantry project not only gets more fresh produce into local food pantries, it builds the capacity of people and neighborhoods to engage in local food production! Furthermore, it grows the CCUA Endowment Fund that invests in long term programing. Here’s how it works: Donors and groups of donors sign up to sponsor a full or a partial row at CCUA’s Urban Farm. A full row (240 sq. ft.) sponsorship is $1,200. Partial row sponsorships are available starting at a single square foot for $5.00. (Half row=$600, quarter row=$300). Every dollar donated helps fight hunger today, tomorrow & into the future. $0.50 goes to provide fresh produce to the Annie Fisher Food Pantry in the Columbia Housing Authority. $0.25 goes to CCUA educational efforts on the Urban Farm and in the community $0.25 goes to establish the CCUA Endowment Fund that provides financial stability for CCUA into the future CCUA delivers fresh produce to the pantry throughout the season and provides hands-on educational opportunities. All donors’ names are listed on CCUA’s website and at the Urban Farm. Donors are also invited to engage in the process at volunteer events throughout the season. You can help us with: Planting beds, weeding, harvesting, cleaning & packing, delivering, and pantry pickup. CCUA brings a fresh approach to hunger relief. The Annie Fisher Food Pantry was selected because CCUA already has a close relationship with the Columbia Housing Authority (CHA) through the Opportunity Gardens program. This program provides low-income people with a raised bed garden, basic tools, seeds and starts, and three years of gardening mentorship. CCUA also maintains four Urban Orchard sites on CHA property, most notably the apples, pears, peaches, and strawberries at 5th and Park Street. These education efforts build the capacity of the community to better engage in urban agriculture and add fresh fruits and vegetables to the dinner table. The fundraising goal for 2013 season is ten rows at the Urban Farm, or $12,000 in sponsorship. Sponsorships from individuals, groups, and businesses will make it possible to meet this goal. Sponsorship opportunities for the 2013 season close on July 26th. Sponsorships received after this date will be for used for the 2014 season. For more information about the Planting for the Pantry program, please visit the CCUA website at ColumbiaUrbanAg.org/Donate/Planting4thePantry/, contact Adam Saunders at [email protected], or call the CCUA office at 573-514-4174. All donors and interested parties are invited to CCUA’s Urban Farm at any of the upcoming ‘Visit Days’, Volunteer Events or Potlucks. Visit the columbiaurbanag.org/get-involved/events-calendar/ to see a complete listing of upcoming events. Thank you very much for your consideration of this great program. I hope you can join me in fighting hunger in a new way. Together we can make a really tasty impact on our community’s health today, tomorrow and into the future! Thank You!
