POINT to be noted mlord- Feminists want to talk about equality? Okay. Are women then also willing to do an equal amount of all the construction work, masonry, oil rig work, coal mining, mechanical work, engineering, logging, electrician work, plumbing, butchery, iron work, trucking, etc.? There is a lack of representation of women in these jobs because it seems to be only men who are capable or willing to do these jobs. Women dont apply for them and report that they prefer safer and cleaner work (despite the fact that these hazardous manual labor jobs are where the most gender inequality is -- average 96% of these jobs are dominated by men). You want to seize the pretty politician and business jobs from men at the top that come with all the precious power and money, but what about all the male-dominated inequality at the bottom? Why ignore that and focus only on implementing equality at the top? Sounds quite elitist to me. More than worrying about the glass ceiling, perhaps you should take a look at the glass cellar youre standing on. Heres some less-than-pretty male-dominated professions you might be interested in persuading your feminist sisters to go into after they graduate with their Womens Studies degree (that is, if theyre interested in fighting inequality): -99% of power plant operators, distributors, and dispatchers are men -91% of electrical engineers are men -97% of power line installers are men -95% of liquid waste treatment plant operators are men -96% of aircraft pilots and flight engineers are men -98% of aircraft mechanics and service technicians are men -100% of locomotive engineers and operators are men Nothing is holding women back from pursuing these careers. In fact, the last company I worked for was required to fill a quota for women workers, but they couldnt meet the quota amount because not enough women would apply for the positions, not even if they begged them. And then there were a few women who applied but bailed out before accepting. Most women simply dont want these jobs; instead, theyll usually try to go for the classy jobs in air-conditioned buildings (that men build for them) so that they can be politicians, lawyers, CEOs, teachers, academics, fashion designers or whatever it is that suits their career fantasies. Most of them are pretty much only interested in achieving equality and gender parity in the male-dominated job areas that come with money, power, status, and prestige. Meanwhile, they leave the male-dominated inequality in place where they see it beneficial for their privilege and interests. Those dirty jobs are mens work. They let men continue to do almost all of the hard and dirty work of the society while they pursue their desk jobs and push for more equality for women in white-collar work whilst ignoring the fact that it will always be mostly men doing the most difficult and most dangerous blue-collar work. Yeah, men are only optional and are not any more valuable than women workers in any way...except when you need masses of men to do your muscle work for you in order to keep industrialized civilization running. I doubt the feminist movement will ever be able to persuade masses of privileged women to enter into these male-dominated manual labor jobs in order to achieve parity with men, nor do I think most feminists are interested in achieving equality in these rough areas. Theyre not interested in having oil rig work occupied by 50% women. We know very well what jobs feminists are encouraging young women to go into. All they want is more women in business suits. It never has been about equality. It has always been about elitism -- ever since feminism was innovated by wealthy, upper middle-class white women. Believe it or not, there is an indispensable need for masculine men to keep our industrialized society running. Civilization is built on the backs of laboring men who were burdened with the obligation to create and innovate for the survival of the species, and yet society scorns them because they are seen as belonging to an insidious male monolith.
