POPE FRANCIS SUNDAY ANGELUS MESSAGE St. Peters Square,March 30, 2014 Today, we are invited to open ourselves to the light of Christ to bear fruit in our lives, to eliminate behaviors that are not Christian. Dear brothers and sisters, Todays Gospel presents us with the story of man blind from birth , to whom Jesus gives sight . The long story opens with a blind man who begins to see and closes - this is curious - with the alleged blind people who continue to remain blind soul. The miracle is narrated by John in just two verses , because the evangelist does not want to draw attention to the miracle in itself , but on what happens next, which raises the discussions , even on small talk, many times a good work , a charitable work inspires conversation and discussion, because there are some who do not want to see the truth. The evangelist John wants to draw attention to this happening even in our days when you do good work . The healed blind man is first questioned by the astonished crowd - they saw the miracle and wonder - and then by the doctors of the law , and these also questioning his parents. At the end of the healed blind man arrives in the faith, and this is the greatest grace that is made by Jesus to not only see , but to know Him, to see Him as the light of the world ( Jn 9:5). While the blind gradually approaches the light , the doctors of law to the contrary sinking deeper and deeper into their inner blindness . Locked in their presumption , they believe they already have the light, why not open to the truth of Jesus They do everything they can to deny the obvious. Cast doubt on the identity of the man healed , and then deny the action of God in healing , taking as an excuse that God does not operate on Saturdays , they even doubted that this man was born blind . Their closure in the light becomes aggressive and leads to expulsion from the temple of man healed. The path of the blind instead is a journey in stages , starting from the knowledge of the name of Jesus does not know more of him , because he says, The man called Jesus made mud , smeared me on the eyes ( v. . 11). Following the pressing questions of the lawyers , the first considers a prophet (v. 17) and then a man close to God (v. 31). After it was removed from the temple, excluded from society , Jesus finds him again and open your eyes for the second time , reveals his true identity: I am the Messiah , so she says. At this point, the man who had been blind, exclaimed: Lord, I believe ! (V. 38) , and bows down in front of Jesus This is a passage from the Gospel that shows the drama of inner blindness of so many people , even our because we sometimes have moments of inner blindness . Our life is sometimes similar to that of the blind man who is open to the light, that it was open to God, which was open to his grace . Sometimes , unfortunately, is a bit as one of the doctors of law : from the height of our pride we judge others , and even the Lord ! Today, we are invited to open ourselves to the light of Christ to bear fruit in our lives, to eliminate behaviors that are not Christian, we are all Christians, but all of us, everyone , sometimes we have non-Christian behaviors , behaviors that are sins. We must repent of this , eliminate these behaviors to walk well on the way of holiness. It has its origin in baptism . We, too, we have been enlightened by Christ in baptism, so that, as St. Paul reminds us , we can act as children of light (Ephesians 5:8 ) , with humility , patience, mercy. These teachers of the law had neither humility nor patience nor mercy ! I would suggest , today , when you get home , take the Gospel of John and read this passage in Chapter 9. You will do well , so youll see why this road from blindness to light , and the other bad road towards a deeper blindness. Let us ask ourselves how is our heart ? I have an open heart or a closed heart ? Open or closed toward God? Open or closed to the neighbour ? Always have some closure born in us from sin , from mistakes , from the mistakes . We must not be afraid! Let us be open to the light of the Lord , He will always waits for us to see better, to give us more light, to forgive us. Do not forget this ! To the Virgin Mary we entrust our Lenten journey , we too , like the blind man healed by the grace of Christ that we can come to light , to go further into the light and be reborn to a new life .
