PORTUGAL GRANTED CITIZENSHIP TO 84000 FOREIGNERS IN 2012 MAJORITY ARE FROM BRAZIL,CAPE VERDE ANGOLA MOLDAVIA AND GUINEA BISSAU Portugal granted citizenship to 84,250 foreigners over the course of 2012 according to data released on Monday by the Registry and Notary Institute. This number represents a drop on the 2011 figure of 86,971 successful citizen applications. The most statistically representative source countries are Brazil, Cape Verde, Angola, Moldavia and Guinea-Bissau. The institute also noted that 2,248 citizenship requests had been turned down last year with 29,930 applications pending as of the end of January. In the majority of such refusals, either the lack of time spent as a legal resident, deficient Portuguese language skills or having been sentenced guilty to a crime carrying a sentence of three years or more imprisonment. Having at least one Portuguese parent, marriage to a Portuguese citizen for over three years or having been a legal resident in Portugal for over six years are the main grounds for citizenship eligibility.
