POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT TITLE: DIRECTOR, MCNAIR SCHOLARS DEPARTMENT: EDUCATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS, STUDENT AFFAIRS REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR FOR EDUCATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS HOURS: FULL-TIME SALARY RANGE: $1,923.07 - $2,500.00 / BI-WEEKLY ($50,000 - $65,000 / ANNUALIZED) FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT *Please be aware that funding for this position is awarded through a Grant/Contract over a specified period. Employment for this position beyond the current Grant/Contract funding is contingent upon continued funding. POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of McNair Scholars will cultivate the next generation of professionals with doctoral degrees who come from first-generation, low-income, and/or underrepresented backgrounds. The Director of McNair Scholars mentors Cal State Fullerton undergraduate students to prepare and progress onto graduate programs until they complete a doctoral degree. The Director of McNair Scholars creates cross-campus collaborations with faculty and staff, fosters external relationships with community partners, graduate schools, research programs, and other resources that will assist in the development of the Scholars and brand Cal State Fullerton McNair Scholars. The Director will guide students through the research process, work in collaboration with their faculty mentors, and ensure that students complete an original research project. The Director will guide students from a variety of disciplines through the research, summer research program, and graduate school application processes. The grant places a special emphasis on recruiting students from the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields to participate. The McNair Director creates a tailored academic advisement, academic support, and professional development plan for each Scholar to ensure each student is provided with the highest-quality opportunities to be successful in a doctoral program and their future careers. Under the Supervision of the Director for Educational Partnerships, the Director of McNair Scholars is responsible for the overall implementation of the McNair Scholars. The day-to-day operations of the project including planning, administering and supervision of staff and budgeting; serves as the program’s chief liaison to other University departments and the community. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Mentors McNair Scholars throughout the research, and graduate application process. • Works in partnership with a faculty-mentor to guide students in designing and implementing their research projects. • Knowledge of graduate programs and guides students through the application process to graduate school and research programs. • Facilitates workshops, writing colloquium, and programs that foster academic preparation, personal development, and graduate school success. • Builds collaborations as this position fosters partnerships with faculty to provide scholars research opportunities. • Fosters cross-campus collaboration with faculty and staff and external partners. • Works in collaboration with the McNair Scholars Advisory Board. • Develops an individualized plan that is tailored for each student to foster their academic, personal, and professional success onto their pathway of completing a doctoral degree. Strong dedication to advising and supporting students. • Implements, supervises, and evaluates project activities. • Recruits, hires, trains, supervise and evaluate all staff. • Develops project budget and monitors and approves expenditures. • Recruits and interview students to determine eligibility to the program. • Oversees record keeping ensuring compliance with grant and federal regulations. • Oversees tracking of program alumni. • Prepares and submit the Annual Performance Report to US Department of Education and any other campus reports. • Attends national and regional conferences representing campus and McNair projects. • Performs all duties required for the implementation and operation of the project. • Duties as assigned. PROGRAM PURPOSE: CSUF McNair Program is a federally funded program, which operates as a comprehensive educational program for Cal State Fullerton undergraduate students who come from low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented backgrounds. McNair Scholars serves 25 students and mentors them to complete research, develop faculty mentor relationships, and skills that are critical to their success as the doctoral level. McNair Scholars provides year- round services to prepare participants for admission and success in quality graduate programs. QUALIFICATIONS: • Excellent oral communication and writing skills. • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to foster cross-campus collaboration with faculty and staff and external partners. • Demonstrates accounting knowledge and experience in budget management. • Demonstrates experience in planning, organizing, directing and coordinating complex student program. • Proven analytical, organizational, planning, leadership skills, preferably with programs serving students from first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented backgrounds. • Experienced computer skills including Microsoft Office and popular software packages. • Ability to demonstrate courtesy, tact and discretion in dealing with numerous members of the professional and academic communities at CSUF and with external partners. • Thorough knowledge of graduate programs and the application process to graduate school and research programs. • Ability to effectively advise the target population. • Knowledge of the research process. • Demonstrates sensitivity to the needs of students from economically and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. • A minimum of three year experience working in TRIO or similar programs focused fostering on retention, academic performance, and student success. • Five years’ experience managing educational programs. • Three to five years’ experience supervising staff. • Valid Driver’s License. EDUCATION: Masters’ degree in education, human services, social work or a related field and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities to perform the functions of the position. Doctoral degree preferred. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Lifting of up to 25lbs.; periodic bending; long-term periods of sitting; long term periods operating a computer.
