POSITIVE DEVELOPMENTS ON DOG MEAT TRADE… As Watchdog Thailand - TopicsExpress

POSITIVE DEVELOPMENTS ON DOG MEAT TRADE… As Watchdog Thailand (Soi Dog’s unit of suppression) continues to raid illegal butchers and traffickers within Thailand (at the time of writing, 3 large-scale butchers were arrested in Sakhon Nakhon province), the trade of Thai dogs to Vietnam appears to have been heavily curtailed… Last week, representatives of ACPA ( Soi Dog Foundation, Humane Society International, Animals Asia and Change for Animals Foundation) including our full time Vietnamese representative, met with border control representatives from Laos and Vietnam. Prior to the meeting, our representatives visited a Vietnamese village in Thanh Hoa province (150 kms south of Hanoi) where all Thai dogs first arrive, along with dogs from Southern Vietnamese provinces. The village is in effect a huge market from which the dogs are taken to their final destination. The report states; “Just a few families in the village are still carrying out this trade. This business made them rich, with big houses. We also spoke with a very kind 85 year old local lady here. She said that in the past the village saw significantly more dogs every day, with hundreds of dogs per truck. They were mostly illegal dogs travelling from Thailand through Laos, into Vietnam. Now, they are mostly domestic dogs from southern Vietnam. We saw many people with small dog cages on their motorbikes going to buy dogs somewhere, then bring them to this holding place”. Many trucks each day with hundreds of dogs in each truck confirms that the 2011 estimate from the Thai Veterinary Association of around 500,000 Thai dogs per year going to Vietnam was no exaggeration and the number was probably significantly more. At the conference with the border authorities, both countries stated that no large trucks had been seen this year (which confirms our intelligence in Thailand) and that they are vigorously enforcing the ban on the trafficking of unvaccinated dogs. Of course the dog meat industry continues in Vietnam and we are now working hard to end the trade there by pointing out the dangers of spreading rabies and other diseases within Vietnam. Similarly, raids in the centre of Thailand have uncovered a large trade based in Chiang Rai province, including the probable export of dogs to China via Burma. A further 1,200 posters will be erected in this region and the Department of Livestock have declared the region a red zone which means that stiffer penalties can be imposed on traffickers. A red zone means that the region is not rabies free, and therefore transporting dogs is illegal. Thanks to Soi Dog supporters, we are winning the war in Thailand and increasing our efforts in Vietnam.
