POST FROM A FRIEND: Just a warning to all my fellow homesteading parents. We wash our back porch often ,mainly because we come in that way from the pasture and such. My 7 yo fell got a pretty big square splinter in his hand. We pulled it out cleaned his hand and wrapped it. The next morning he woke up his hand was swollen twice the size of the other one. Ended in the hospital with hand surgery. He had a massive infection the cultures so far have grown 3 different type of bacteria. They also took out 6 more pieces of splinter one of which was 1 1/2 inches long amd brusied a nerve!!! We could not see the other 6 pieces in his hand at all. We are on day 4 in the hospital and even though he feels fine we have to stay until they find out what the gram positive bacteria is. So just be extra careful with splinters
