PREPARE SURVIVAL KITS, DOST SECRETARY URGES DOST Secretary Mario G. Montejo advised people living in areas along the projected track of Typhoon Ruby to pack their emergency supplies and valuable belongings in their own respective “survival kits” while there is still time. “I cannot overemphasize the fundamental need for us to prepare. Dapat ihanda na natin ang lahat ng ating kinakailangang supply at mahahalagang gamit bago pa sumalpok si Ruby (We should start preparing all the emergency supplies we need before Ruby makes landfall,” said Montejo in a brief statement. He explained that survival kits can be prepared in advance using a waterproof bag that contains food and water provisions for at least three days, pocket knife, first aid kit, matches or lighters, flashlight with extra batteries, cash, extra clothes, a long rope, plus cellphone with e-cards and charger or powerbank. If carrying important documents, Montejo said, these should be sealed in plastic or any waterproof material. The science secretary reiterated the call for those staying in fragile housing structures to move to structurally safe temporary shelters as part of the overall preventive evacuation measures now being undertaken in many local communities throughout Eastern Visayas. He also expressed the need for local leaders to closely coordinate with vital government services to ensure peace and order as well as continuity of operations before, during and after calamities. As of 11:00 AM, December 5, the eye of Typhoon Ruby was spotted 500 kilometers east of Borongan, Eastern Samar, packing maximum winds of 215 kilometers per hour (kph) with gustiness at 250 kph. It is projected to move at a rate of 13 kph west northwest.
