PRESIDENT CALVIN COOLIDGE Though most Americans hardly know anything about the 30 th. President of the United States, Calvin Coolidge ( 1923 - 1929 ). He is now coming into his own and has even been praised as the Greatest President in the last 100 years. A lawyer from Vermont, he became the Governor of Massachusetts and had the reputation as a small-government conservative. President Coolidge restored public confidence after he had inherited a mess in the White House of his predecessor whose administration was filled with scandal. He believed in following the Constitution and was frugal, cutting taxes to have more jobs for the workers.and defended the African Americans and Catholics when they were discriminated upon and would not allow any Ku Klux Klan members in his administration who also worked to improve the programs for the Native Americans Indians. He was fiscally conservative, and lowered taxes to increase revenues. ( President Reagan learned that from him if I am not mistaken ) When it came to making expenditures, he always maintained a balanced budget. He wanted the government to let business be free and not burden them with so many strangling regulations. Coolidge was very quiet ( known as Silent Cal ) reserved and a man of few words. Though he was a skilled public speaker, they tell the story of a Lady seated next to him at a dinner who said to him, I made a bet today that I could get you to say more than two words out of you. He replied, You Lost. He and his wife had a happy marriage, she was a Live wire, talkative and a lot of fun and he was quiet and serious. His wife, Grace Anna, happened to first see him in an open window of a boarding house shaving in his long underwear wearing a derby hat. Coolidge later explained he wore the derby to keep his red hair out of his eyes. When President Harding died unexpectedly, as Vice President, Coolidge was visiting his family home at the time. Since he had no telephone or electricity, a messenger came giving word of Hardings death. Coolidge got dressed, said a prayer to the Good Lord and went downstairs to meet the reporters. His Father was a Notary Public and administered the oath of Office in the Family Parlor illuminated by a Kerosene lamp. The next day he went to Washington and was re-sworn by the Justice of the Supreme Court. Listen to President Coolidges words of wisdom and how he then gave the solution to the true problems of America .... That are more then ever, desperately needed today. We do not need more material development, we need more spiritual development. We do not need more intellectual power, we need more moral power. We do not need more knowledge, we need more character. We do not need more government, we need more culture. We do not need more law, we need more religion. We do not need more of the things that are seen, we need more of the things that are unseen. It is on that side of life that it is desirable to put the emphasis at the present time. If that side is strengthened, the other side will take care of itself. It is that side which is the foundation of all else. If the foundation be firm, the super-structure will stand.
