PRESIDENT OBAMA DELAYING REVIEWS OF DEPORTATION, HOPING CONGRESS WILL PASS IMMIGRATION REFORM In March, the president directed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to review U.S. deportation policies to determine whether these policies could be made more humane. This was in response to growing protest amongst pro-reform advocates and immigrants who have witnessed the highest rate of deportations, nearly 2 million, under any presidential administration. Families have been torn apart with many deportations removing immigrants who pose no serious threat and have never been convicted of a serious crime. Fast forward to the current day -- with hopes of creating the greatest possibility for Congress to pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform, the president has delayed the DHS review for four months. The White House sees June and July as the last chance for Congress to act before the August congressional recess where many lawmakers will then turn their focus to the midterm elections in November. The president hopes by delaying the deportation review, he will encourage Congress to put all their energy and attention into passing a bill without worrying about the president enacting his own immigration policies, albeit limited, through executive action. Most House Republicans, including its leaders, have said the major roadblock to reform is the lack of faith in the president to enforce their policies if they were to pass legislation. The president hopes the delayed review will embolden House Republicans to step up and do what many in the party insist they want to do -- pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform. With the president stepping back, pro-reform advocacy groups can also throw all their force into pressuring House Republicans to take action.
