PRESS RELEASE JULY 9, 2014 40th Nutrition Month Theme focuses on disaster preparedness By: Jean L. Aquino Tarlac City (CIO) – The City Government of Tarlac through the City Health Office, Association of Barangay Chairmen and the City Nutrition Committee launched the 40th Nutrition Month recently with the theme: “Kalamidad Paghandaan, Gutom at Malnutrisyon Agapan, apparently focusing on disaster preparedness that emphasizes the importance of nutrition in emergencies. The launching was held during the flag raising ceremony on July 7 at the City Hall with city employees and city officials in attendance. Nutrition in Emergencies refers to key nutrition services that are components of emergency preparedness, response, and recovery phases in preventing death and worsening of malnutrition in the affected population particularly among infants, children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, and elders. The Department of Interior and Local Government, in a memorandum circular dated June 20, 2014, is enjoining the local government units to participate in this year’s celebration that aims to: 1) promote interventions to address nutritional needs in emergencies and disasters including preparedness, response and recovery; 2)mobilize responders particularly the local nutrition clusters and other stakeholders to address gaps in nutrition in emergency response from national to barangay levels; and 3) increase awareness among families and individuals on coping and resiliency strategies to prevent malnutrition and worsening of nutritional status in time of emergencies and disasters. Mayor Gelacio “Ace” Manalang designated the City Nutrition Committee and Barangay Nutrition Committee as the City Nutrition Cluster and Barangay Nutrition Cluster, respectively, to respond during cases of emergency, disaster and calamity in the city. Meanwhile, the line-up activities of CHO includes Essay writing contest on Nutrition Month Theme-DepEd-Grade 6 pupils, Mother’s Class on Infant and Young Child Feeding (all City Helth Centers) for the whole month of July, Stress Management/Stress Debriefing to Tarlac City Water District employees and Supplemental Feeding of school children of Armenia Elementary School. Councilor Antonette Belmonte, Association of Barangay Chairmen Allan Manchoy Manalang,City Health Officer Dra. Ma. Carmela Go with her staff showcased their dance moves for the launching of jingle for healthy lifestyle dance exercise.
