PRESS RELEASE July 10, 2014 Operation Timbangan in Uptown Market By Jason E. Mamawal TARLAC CITY (CIO) – A surprise inspection or saturation drive on weighing scales used by vendors known as “Operation Timbangan” was conducted at the Uptown Public Market here on July 10. The operation was participated in by the City Government of Tarlac through the City Treasurer’s Office and City Economic Enterprise Management Office with the Department of Trade and Industry-Tarlac and Tarlac Consumers Council, Inc. The groups were able to calibrate 63 weighing scales. Three weighing scales were found defective and were confiscated by the city government. All confiscated weighing scales will be simultaneously destroyed. The goal of the operation is not only to check and inspect weighing scales but also to inform consumers of their rights and to be more vigilant due to some dishonest vendors who manipulate their weighing scales. Operatives from the City Treasurer’s Office said that new weighing scales still not calibrated should be brought for inspection before it can be used. If not defective and by payment of the weights and measures fee worth P60 per weighing scale, a seal from the city government is issued and the weighing scale can be used up to three months. Weighing scales, they said, should be calibrated quarterly.
