PRODUCING HEALTHY CHICKEN FOR HEALTH-CONSCIOUS NATION By Manny Pinol There is a world-wide trend towards healthy or organic food and this could influence the way farmers around the world grow or raise their farm products. In the Braveheart Farms in Baragay Paco, Kidapawan City, we are trying our best to produce backyard free-ranged chicken with the least use of vaccines. Our standard vaccination program only involves immunization for Fowl Pox, known in the vernacular as kalunggo or bulutong and NCD or New Castle Disease known locally as aratay or dungoy. These vaccines are administered on the Manok PiNoy chicks during the first month that they are kept in the brooders before they are brought to the free-range to enjoy the green grass, the sunlight and where they chase insects and bugs. In addition, electrolytes are mixed in the water for the chicks periodically to protect them from stress which could affect their growth. Beyond these artificial interventions in the growing of the Manok PiNoy chicks, all other farm practices adhere to the most natural way of growing chicken. This is the best effort that we could undertake in ensuring that the chicken which will be slaughtered and offered to the market after three months are as chemical-free and healthy as possible. Towards the finishing stage of the rearing of Manok PiNoy, they are given a mix of feeds heavy on yellow corn as the high protein acquired from corn gives the chicken meat a natural taste. While I cannot possibly claim that I am producing organic chicken, these farm practices allow me to compose a slogan which says: Manok PiNoy, Tunay at Natural na Manok Para sa Panlasang Pinoy. (Video caption: I took this video of the Manok PiNoy chicks in the brooder yesterday, July 31.)
