PROF. TUNDE FATUNDE SPEAKS THE FELA LANGUAGE -------------------------------------------------- He had always been a Fela researcher. Back in the days in the early 1970s, as a student in the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, studying the French language, Felas AFRICA SHRINE and KALAKUTA REPUBLICS ambiance held a Special attraction to him. Most weekends saw him in Lagos at the old Africa Shrine, religiously listening to the music of Fela and the famous Felas Yabis. It is not exactly clear if this was the turn on or turn around for then young Tunde Fatunde. But what emerged from all these was not really a French speaking colonial graduate. It was amazingly a Pidgin English speaking Professor. Now, can you beat that. Prof. Tunde FATUNDEs graduating final year term paper was based on Fela. What intrigued him most was Felas language; PIDGIN ENGLISH. And that became a source of Inspirations to him. Prof. Fatunde had to date, written about six plays in Pidgin English. His romance with Fela became even stronger after Felas death. At Felas funeral in Lagos, 1997, Prof. Fatunde did a compendium on Fela in French for a France based magazine, JEUNE AFRIQUE ECONOMIQUE. And has done several scholarly work on Felas language and poetry. Pidgin English was the lingua franca in Felas KALAKUTA REPUBLIC/AFRICA SHRINE. Speaking any local dialect was prohibited and a punishable offence. Reason; Felas household was composed of persons from all parts of Africa. So to avoid unnecessary rancour and discriminations, Pidgin English, an Aficanised form of English, was the official language. The strength of Pidgin English is in its wide acceptability across the Africa continent. It is a very poetic language.
