PROPANE LEAK UPDATE IN PACIFIC BEACH: Pacific Beach Elementary School was evacuated as a precaution this morning because of a nearby propane leak. Students and staff were bussed to the nearby Naval facilities up the hill starting about 8:30 a.m. until they were given the all-clear notice two hours later, followed by another hour to air out the building. “We went up to the Navy base, and they have a game room, a gymnasium and a movie theater. So we had kids playing games and they put on a movie for the kids,” said North Beach School Supt. Stan Pinnick. After the propane leak at the four-corners area of State Route 109 and Ocean Beach Road ended at about 10:30, the district waited another hour to bring the students back so the rooms could be fully aired out as a precaution, Pinnick said. “It was a day they will talk about,” he said of the students. The propane leak was caused by a faulty valve at a neighboring location and “there was significant odor drifting toward our building,” Pinnick said of the precautionary evacuation after Fire District No. 8 arrived on the scene.
