PROPERTY SALE / EXHIBITION AT AHMEDABAD Sadbhavna - Gujarati Ishtyle! Yesterday and today a Property mela [sale cum promotional exhibition] was held at GMDC grounds, Ahmedabad. [SPRAT and I habe been keen to acquire two residential flats and office space of about 1500-2000 SFt.] Contrary to apprehensions we harboured some expectations and I along with four officers [three of which are Hindus] visited this sale today. At stall after stall after stall - and after being received enthusiastically - we were told point blank, if politely, that no property is available for Muslims. [Others have put it less politely: Sorry, Sir, not for M-class.] Except for two stalls that are marketing open plots near Bagodra close to large Muslim habitation, and a developer called Safal, NOT A SINGLE property was even discussed. Politely some would say, you can buy it in a Hindus name and get a Power of Attorney! When insisted they would clarify: we have nothing against Muslims, Sir [followed usually by a long list of her/his Muslim friends / driver / cook et al], but, you see, when a Muslim buys a flat no Hindu buys the next. You want to buy the entire scheme, we are ok, they would imply. GUJARAT, are you India? Or, INDIA, are you for Muslims, also? Do Muslims have a claim upon you? Hindu friends, try to imagine how it feels to hear this when you painstakingly collect the cash to pay the market price? Was it difficult for Modi to change this? Indeed, this polarization and ghettoization are his and his partys gift. If only the govt were to charge a higher rate of municipal property taxation for exclusive societies or offer a concession for mixed localities... Invite you to discuss.
