PROVINCE HOLDS SERIES OF CHESS CLINICS AND TOURNEYS TO ENHANCE SKILLS OF POTENTIAL WOODPUSHERS Lingayen- - -The provincial government will conduct a series of chess clinics for young woodpushers in the last quarter of this year as part of its sports development program. Modesto Operania, Executive Assistant III and provincial sports coordinator, said the chess clinics will run from September 20-21 and 27 -28 at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center (PTDC) here. Dubbed “Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. Chess Clinic,” the training program for young chess enthusiasts was launched in 2009 in coordination with the Pangasinan Chess League (PCL) to further improve the skills of players in “game of wizards.” According to PCL President Don Sison, the chess clinics are expected to draw hordes of participants aiming to follow the footsteps of International Master Haridas Pascua, Samantha Glo Revita, Cherry Ann Mejia, Giovanni Mejia and Dennis Guttierez III and other Pangasinan players who have been with chess tournaments in international competitions. Scheduled to be held on October 18-19 is the 4th Pangasinan Age-Group Chess Championship which is in coordination with the Pangasinan Chess League headed by Don Sison. This will be followed by the 6th Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. Cup Open Chess Tournament on December 26-28. This year’s twin chess tournaments are expected to surpass last year’s number of 300 competitors, thrice more than what a regular tournament can gather. Over the last five years, Pangasinan has produced a core of topnotch chess players that saw action in national and international competitions. mer/rrb
