PTSD: battle fatigue, shell shock, soldiers heart, soldiers - TopicsExpress

PTSD: battle fatigue, shell shock, soldiers heart, soldiers sorrow, decostas syndrome, railway spine, and traumatic neurosis. It has gone by many different names throughout different eras. It has many different levels from minor-mild-severe. Is it something that some claim and use as an excuse for actions when its not? Yes. Is it something that is responsible for erratic decisions sometimes? Could be. Is it something still greatly misunderstood and labeled? Yes. Unfortunately soldiers know that a great deal of people that have no understanding of it are quick to judge and stereotype them, and refuse getting necessary help for fear of judgment, and being labeled as damaged goods. In light of recent events, Im not sure how to address it on Facebook in a short manner to try explaining the matter. I will say this, it saddens me that another event has happened on a military base by a soldier and has immediately been labeled as being caused by PTSD. The action of one by no means should affect the reputation or character of others. We are winding down from 10+ years of war, and a LOT of Americans have fought and received residual side affects, but nowhere close to making us psychos. Stereotyping anyone does nothing more than display ignorance and someones lack of ability to try understanding someone elses perspective..... it shows a low level of intelligence and not having a strong mind of your own. Ask yourself this, if youve ever had an incident happen that has bothered you, made you not like certain events that are related to that incident, you have a form of PTSD. Remember that when meeting a soldier and give them a chance to display who they are, youll be impressed. People need support to thrive, not judgement....... ALL generations have suffered from war, what is the difference in the recovery process? Support. How much of a difference in support was there after WWII compared to Vietnam? How much of a difference in stereotypes were there between the two different generations? A lot. The two questions are relative. With support there is hope, without there is shame. Please remember this as fellow Americans are coming home, we all play a part in how this unfolds........
