Page A13 from todays Star Tribune: How much would you pay for extra time with your dying child? $50,000 for a drug that was later proven to offer no more time than a placebo. It is time to reign in the medical and pharmaceutical industries and get everyone affordable insurance. A method suggested by Thom Hartmann is Medicare for all; lower the eligibility age by 5 years every year until it hits 0 and remove restrictions on the government to negotiate prices with pharma and medical device manufacturers. This would also slowly cut out insurance companies from the mix; besides skimming off the top, and adding a layer of paperwork complexity to an already complex system, can anyone tell me what benefit(s) health insurance companies bring to the table? Value adds, anyone?.. Anyone? No? Then good riddance. The reason the free market fails so miserably in the health care industry is because demand is so inelastic; people will lose everything they own for a chance at an extra month with a loved one. We should keep this in mind while we try to structure something that makes sense.
