Die Vermittlungs-Initiative von US-Außenminister John Kerry, der zur Reanimierung der palästinensisch-israelischen Friedensverhandlungen aufgerufen hatte, wurde vom Erfolg gekrönt. Kerry hatte in der Vorwoche die Vereinbarung mit Israel und der PNA bekannt gegeben, auf deren Grundlage die Wiederaufnahme der Verhandlungen der Konfliktseiten möglich sei. Abbas bekräftigte die Ablehnung der palästinensischen Seite gegen die Siedlungstätigkeit Israels im Westjordanland und bekundete die Absicht, jedes Abkommen, das mit Israel geschlossen werden sollte, einer Volksabstimmung zu unterbreiten. Israel hat sich bereit erklärt, unverzüglich die Friedensverhandlungen mit den Palästinensern wieder aufzunehmen, und zwar ohne Vorbedingungen.
