Panic gripped in Kak Sarai “I was thrashed by civilians inside police station” Neyaz Elahi: CNS: Panic gripped in and around Kak Sarai area of Srinagar on Friday when people came on roads and raised anti-police slogans after the news came that Mohalla president and vice president were beaten to pulp by two unidentified persons inside police station Karan Nagar in presence of Police Officer. Mohalla president, Ghulam Mohammad Sofi confirmed to CNS that he was thrashed by two civilians in presence of a police officer who acted as a ‘mute spectator’ inside police station. Eyewitnesses told CNS that the collision between two vehicles near Kak Sarai created chaos when the two unidentified youth who were driving a Zen came out from the vehicle and started beating the driver of Sentro car. “I was walking along the roadside when Sentro Car collided with Zen. Two youth from Zen came out and thrashed the owner of the Sentro Car. When people intervened, the youth used mobile phones and in a jiffy some higher rank officer arrived and he started thrashing all those people who tried to save the driver of the Sentro car,” one of the witnesses told CNS.The timely intervention of police brought the things under control and police soon after called the Mohalla president Ghulam Mohammad Sofi and Vice President Abdul Ahad Sofi to the police station. “As I was in the police station, the two civilians whom I didn’t know thrashed us on the pretext that we supported the driver of the Sentro Car. I was shocked that a police officer did not intervene and he gave both the civilians free hand,” Ghulam Mohammad Sofi told CNS adding that they even threatened him to shot in his head with their pistol. He further said that “one of the youth took out a rod from the vehicle and tried to hit me but the time intervention form some constables saved my life. It is irony that police officer treated them well even after they beat me. When the police officer left from the Station, these people again thrashed me while I was sitting in front of Munshi of the police station.As the word spread about the thrashing of Mohalla president, people came on roads while the shopkeepers downed their shutters. People raised anti-establishment slogans and alleged that officer failed to protect the rights of the people. Some senior police officials visited the spot and assured people action against the culprits.When contacted Station House Officer Karan Nagar, Basharat Ahmed told CNS that it was a sheer misunderstanding that has been resolved now. When asked about the allegations leveled by president of the locality, SHO said that he does not know anything about that. A police official told CNS that some people tried to attack police personnel while diffusing the situation. "We called all those who were present on the spot of accident and they even tried to assault each other at police station. We are investigating the matter and culprits will be booked," he said.When contacted, Director General of Police Ashok Prasad told CNS that he will look into the matter. "Let me check it. I will definitely look into the matter," he said. (CNS)
