Paranoia. According to the Chinese press, the leaders of the movement received special training from the American intelligence services, the anchor on state-owned Rossiya 24 said during a segment on the Hong Kong protests. Later in the day, the anchor on state-controlled First Channel introduced the report from Hong Kong by suggesting the U.S. was behind the protests. Beijing has said the protest organizers are linked to the American State Department, the anchor said. The Chinese government, however, hasnt explicitly made such an accusation. Antigovernment protests erupted in Moscow in late 2011 in the wake of disputed parliamentary elections, marking the biggest-ever public threat to Russian President Vladimir Putins nearly decade-and-a-half rule. At the time, Mr. Putin blamed the U.S. for the unrest, specifically singling out the State Department and then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. They shake us up so we dont forget who is boss on our planet, Mr. Putin said, referring to the U.S. In reports Tuesday, both First Channel and Rossiya 24 showed a video appeal by a young female protester in Hong Kong and compared it with a similar clip filmed by a young female protester in Kiev. The reports characterized the two clips as identical and suggested they were the handiwork of the U.S. The reportage also raised doubts about the ability of rank-and-file Hong Kong students to organize such a mass demonstration. The protesters are mostly of the smartphone generation—college, even high-school students, a correspondent for Rossiya 24 said. But its unlikely they learned on their own, at their desks, how to turn on their mobile-phone screens simultaneously for an effective image. Its unlikely that people of school age came up with the elegant idea of bringing umbrellas, again creating a juicy picture. He suggested the U.S. instructed them.
