Parke said a person on Twitter last week “called for my execution for treason because I had questioned the government’s rapid escalation of our new involvement in Iraq from a purely humanitarian mission to one where we appear to be joining the US in an open-ended fight”. Parke said she was concerned “about the increased security risk to Australians everywhere as a result of our involvement in further action in Iraq”. “We Australians like to think of ourselves as universally loved but this is not always the case, particularly as a result of our involvement in Iraq in 2003 and the public positions taken from time to time by Australian political leaders in support of Israel’s actions against the Palestinians, even where these are plainly contrary to international law,” she said. “These issues matter to a great many people in the world and we are foolish if we fail to think through the consequences of our words and actions. One of these consequences is the fertile ground such issues provide for the recruitment of new members to the extremist cause.” theguardian/world/2014/sep/23/islamic-state-labor-mp-says-rational-debate-drowned-out-by-drums-of-war?CMP=soc_567
