Part 35 (Crucifixion of Jesus – 2) Today, I will start explaining the proofs from the New Testament that the crucifixion really happened in summer and not in spring. I have read on 2009-07-18 that the author Desmond Stewart (1924-1981) in his book, “The Foreigner—A Search for the First Century Jesus” questioned that both the stories of the fig tree (Mark 11:12-14, 20-22; Matthew 21:18-20) and the young man in linen cloth (Mark 14:50-52) must have happened during summer and not during spring. He argued that the fig tree is a summer-fruiting tree and as such, is not expected to bear fruit in early spring. He also argued that a light garment like a linen cloth the young man had on would “hardly fit the overcoat chill of early spring.” Actually, there are two crops of fruit each year, one in spring called breba crop from last year’s shoot growth, and one in summer or main crop which is from the current year’s shoot growth that is generally more superior in both quantity and quality than the breba crop. The leaves of fig tree is broad that is why it sheds its leaves during winter. Leaf buds appear in spring. What did Jesus see in Mark 11:13 and Matthew 21:19? A fig tree having leaves – because it was summer. And Jesus expected to find fruits in it. Not finding any, He cursed the fig tree. Nisan 14, a spring day, is still relatively cold in Jerusalem (altitude, about 750m above sea level). Another thing is that the arrest of Jesus was in the evening of Passover. Could someone with “a linen cloth cast about his naked body” bear the coldness of the night in early spring? I am sharing these to you so that you know what to say to those who believe that the crucifixion of Jesus happened in spring. It happened in summer, on 08-17, as Ama said, and these stories about the fig tree and the young man in linen cloth are some of them. (to be continued)
