Participants in the Brunei-U.S. English Language Enrichment Project for ASEAN gathered around the hula mound on the lawn behind Burns Hall to watch a hula performance by Mapuana de Silva’s Halau Mohala ‘Ilima . The dance and commentary served as an introduction to Hawaiian culture for these Southeast Asian professionals embarking on four weeks of leadership development and English language training at the East-West Center. This program, a partnership between the University of Brunei Darussalam and the East-West Center sponsored by the Government of Brunei Darussalam, aims to improve English proficiency and leadership development, build human capacity, and develop knowledge of regional issues and peoples and cultures of ASEAN and people-to-people linkages in the region.
