Passing this along for all of you @TheNewSchool... call for articles on Ferguson, police militarization and struggles for justice... From the New School Zine Publishing Collective, St. Louis roils with the pain of Michael Brown’s death, the spectre of racism, and the military suppression of protest and accountability. A video was recently released which proved that the NYPD covered up the death of a young man hit by a speeding squad cruiser which ran a red light. A recent campaign against cyclists, “Operation Safe Cycle” included an illegal $88 surcharge on tickets that the NYPD declined to correct or comment upon; and they’ve been handing out $260 tickets for harmless infractions while they park police vans in bike lanes - an obvious traffic violation. The Onion reports sardonically, “Insecure, Frustrated Bully With Something To Prove Considering Career In Law Enforcement.” The Los Angeles Police Protective League penned an article asking why nobody is outraged about a spate of attempted murders on police. There is then, something of a moment whose participants stretch from a young black kid in Brownsville to Alec Baldwin on his city bike: a moment where we are puzzled by the connection between our police force and justice, and a band of solidarity runs through all social groups. What does the militarization of the police mean for politics, expression, and domestic safety? Who do the police serve? Can we reform them, or abolish them? And what would come next; how do we apply justice in society, justly? Are all cops bastards? Is insurrection, revolution, or reform the path to justice? Are riots crimes or political expressions? We hope to explore these questions and more in an anthology of short writings by New Schoolers through the New School Zine Collective called Emergency Issue #1: Police Crisis. If you are an individual or an organization, please consider contributing a 1-1,000 word essay, piece, or photo(s) on the topic. Take a wide interpretation of the topic: we would love to compile a gamut of voices from personal experiences to high philosophizing about justice and ‘the good society’. Publication will be free. All those contributing will receive a copy of the zine, and the rest of the zines will be freely distributed within the university using Zine Collective’s funding and installations. DEADLINE: September 15th Contact: Joseph Giacona - [email protected] (Once the Zine Collective has a Facebook link for this I will post it...)
