Pastor’s Devotional April 20, 2014 “You Can’t Keep The Good Man Down” Acts 2 gives us the church’s first sermon preached by the Apostle Peter, 50 days after Jesus’ resurrection during the Jewish harvest festival of Pentecost. Peter’s preaching, as all preaching should, centers on the meaning of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection. In Acts 2:22-23, Peter states that Jesus’ death was according to God’s set purpose and foreknowledge; even though he knew it was Judas who betrayed Jesus. You see God is always in control. God took the worst event in human history, the crucifixion of the innocent, sinless son of God, and worked it for the good of all humanity (Hebrews 2:14-15). We all live and die, but Jesus died so that we might live; because the grave could not hold Him down (Acts 2:24). I have “apps” for my iPad and iPhone, but there is no “get out of the grave app”. The old saying is that you can’t keep a good man down, but Jesus is “The Man” (1Timothy 2:5-6). He is the only man to be raised from the dead, never to die again (Revelation 1:17-18). You see death is for sinners, but Jesus had no sin; and in Him was life, so it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him after he made atonement for your sins and mine. For those of you going through test and trials, God will take you through them. You can’t keep down what is meant to come up. Also, you can’t keep in what is meant to come out. Both my daughter and daughter-in-law are expecting, and those babies must come out. But their expectation of a child comes with pain and suffering that gets replaced with joy, when their children are born. So then, you too must be prepared for difficulty as God fulfills his expectations for your life. “Faith in Action” Name an event that initially was bad for you, but God worked it together for your good (Romans 8:28).
