Pat Broderick is right to be angry. But hes angry at the wrong thing. Comic artist Pat Broderick had a big rant about cosplayers, how theyre narcissists who are ruining comics and comics culture for everyone. Its pretty much a repeat of Tony Harris fake geek girls speech and Denise Normans anti-cosplay speech. Clearly, theres something about modern comics culture thats pissing professionals off, and a bunch of them have zeroed in on cosplayers who claim to be fans of something, but dont care about it beyond the surface level... Yes. Theres a problem, but an increased focus on cosplay at conventions isnt it. The problem has always been with us. In the 50s, when Disney refused to allow its creators to sign their names to their work, and fans of Carl Barks only knew him as The Good Duck Artist. When DC comics screwed over Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster. When Bob Kane screwed over Bill Finger. When Marvel screwed over Jack Kirby. Comics has a long and storied tradition of treating its creators like shit. Theyll celebrate, commemorate and revel in the wonderment of Superman or the Fantastic Four, while ignoring, sidelining and consigning to the dustbin the creators, artists and writers who created their adventures. Theyll gladly celebrate fictional people, while reviling the actual human beings who created them. In the end, humans are disposable cogs in a machine that takes characters and turns them into money, and if one of those cogs wears out and has to be discarded, there are always more. And fans have learned that. So yeah, if a fan will be so fascinated by The Joker that theyll create a meticulous costume perfect in every detail to Neal Adams style and designs, but ignore Neal Adams sitting there at a convention table, maybe its not because theyre a bad excuse for a fan, but because theyve learned EXACTLY the lessons that the comics industry have been teaching them for almost a century - that Creators dont matter. And maybe instead of swinging at the low-hanging fruit - the fans whove been taught that creators dont matter - people for whom this is a concern need to take aim at Warner Brothers and Disney - the guys whove been teaching them that for decades. themarysue/comic-book-artist-slams-cosplay-again/
