Pat Flaherty Indianapolis 1959 in the John Zink Heater Special Watson Offenhauser. The 1956 Indy 500 winner returned to competition for the first time after receiving critical injuries following his big win in the 56 500. Pat was supposed to drive this new car in 1958 but he was unable to pass his physical which put Jimmy Reece in the drivers seat that year. In May of 1959 Pat was ready to take the wheel again. He qualified the car at 142.399 and started 18th, but on race day he was race ready and he was really something to watch. He was 6th by lap 3, 5th on lap 8 and 2nd at lap 30. He battled with Jim Rathmann for the lead before his first pit stop. But later an oil leak developed in the cockpit that caused him to battle oily goggles and that, coupled with fatigue caused Pat to fade from the top 10 before crashing on the front stretch on lap 162.
