Patagonian Boere! My ex-pat friend from New Zealand, Ian Allen, sent me this. Ive known about this group of Afrikaners living in Argentina for a while now, but this really evoked a mixture of emotions in me. Like them, or hate them, they have always been known for passion, hard work and fortitude. Ian says: How’s this for a borderline bizarre set-up. Almost 110 years ago a breakaway group of Afrikaners decided living under British rule was not for them and they emigrated to Patagonia. There they farmed and their language kind of fossilised and was passed down through the generations. Here a couple of the current older blokes talk about their situation and language, never having been to SA. I’m surprised the language lasted as long as it has but doesn’t look as though it will for a great deal longer.
