Pattaya waits as Military Junta mulls over further changes to Curfew - On Wednesday Afternoon reports from Bangkok suggested the Military Junta were considering a major change to the nationwide curfew in tourist areas of Thailand which have been largely peaceful since the Coup began. The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), led by General Prayuth, has received complaints from Tour Operators, Tourism Associations and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, who have urged the Military Junta to consider lifting the Curfew altogether in tourist areas such as Phuket and Pattaya, which have experienced no major anti-coup demonstrations. The Tourism Industry, which is thought to account for 10% of GDP, has suffered greatly since the Coup and subsequent Curfew, especially late night venues, which have been forced to close much earlier that they are used to. The NCPO have responded in a positive manner and will set up a working committee which will “risk assess” a potential change to the Curfew in certain areas of Thailand and will report to General Prayuth with their findings. It is expected a decision will be made by the NCPO within 7 days.
