Pauline Neilson Kaleidoscope STUDIO 19 - Yellow House Cafe If you want a quick introduction to the inspiration behind my images shown here then go no further than the following quote from Dom Perignon, at his discovery of champagne! Come quickly I am tasting stars On this level I have loved creating these images simply because of the joy and pleasure they have given me just as when we drink champagne to celebrate happy occasions. On a deeper level I have a much more long winded and convoluted relationship with this work. The title of Kaleidoscope connects me to a sense of magic and wonderment I experienced as a child when I first looked into a kaleidoscope. A kaleidoscope is a cylinder with mirrors containing loose, coloured objects such as beads or pebbles and bits of glass. As the viewer looks into one end, light entering the other creates a colourful pattern, due to the reflection off the mirrors. Kaleidoscope is derived from the Ancient Greek (kalos), beautiful, beauty, (eidos), that which is seen: form, shape and (skopeō), to look to, to examine, hence observation of beautiful forms. It is also a word used to describe a series of changing phases or events such as when we say a kaleidoscope of illusions. And so this exhibition is about the reflections in our lives and the beautiful patterns that we can create within and without ourselves. The symbol of the kabbalistic Tree of Life has been superimposed within some of the images as has the Flower of Life symbol to remind us that inner and outer beauty is cross cultural and timeless. The Tree of Life is most widely recognized as a concept within the Kabbalah and is used to understand the nature of God and the manner in which the world was created out of nothing. But the Tree of Life does not only speak of the origins of the physical Universe out of the unimaginable, but also of Mans place in the Universe. Since Man is invested with Mind, consciousness in the Kabbalah is thought of as the fruit of the physical world, through whom the original infinite energy can experience and express itself as a finite entity. Since its energies are the basis of all Creation, the Tree of Life can potentially be applied to any area of life, especially the inner world of Man, from the subconscious all the way to what Kabbalists call the higher self. The Flower of Life is said to be a symbol of sacred geometry that represents ancient spiritual beliefs, and that they depict fundamental aspects of space and time. I like the way my images sit within the concept of our place within the Universe and my continual quest for peace and beauty.
